$530 is the cost for GF Week 2012

Transport Grants
We are able to offer a limited number of grants supplied by the Knox Centre for Ministry and Leadership to those from the following areas:

Southland and Otago and inland South Island ($150)

See the registration form for how to apply for your subsidy

Parish Subsidies
It is hoped that churches will get behind participants and consider ways of supporting them financially to attend Going Further 2012. A conversation with the Minister and/or another leader in the church informing them of Going Further and what is involved would be a good place to start. Refer them to the Going Further website

Great Barrier Island and Orama
At the edge of the Hauraki gulf, Great Barrier is the largest island on the North Island coast. It is one of the most tranquil, unspoilt places you will ever find. Its golden beaches, crystal clear waters and native forests are home to relatively few people. Nature, in all its rugged beauty, is still in charge. It is renowned for its wildlife, seldom seen elsewhere. During late summer it is sub-topical in climate.

www.greatbarriernz.com

www.thebarrier.co.nz

Orama
Orama is the Greek word for vision. For 35 years, Orama has been a Christian community, providing hospitality and facilities for personal rehabilitation, groups, discipleship schools, retreats and church camps. It is at the head of Karaka Bay in north-east Great Barrier and owns and manages all the land on the bay. It has its own jetty. In the evening, the sun sets across the bay.

www.orama.org.nz

“From beginning to end, the Journey launched me into an experience I had never imagined. The boat ride was an adventurous trip through the wide open space of blue sea, and for the first time in my life I experienced “sea turbulence”. Upon arrival, the sight was spectacularly breathtaking. Hidden in an extraordinary cove surrounded by trees water and sun, was my sanctuary for the next six days. I embraced it immediately. And so began my journey of renewal”. Annie 2010 GF Participant South Auckland

“Great Barrier Island; of all the places I’ve attended camps this was one of the most isolated, the most idyllic, the most conducive to connecting with God. The scenery, like the intricately crafted backdrops of a Ballet production, enhanced the experience of Going Further in a way that no other place could”. Rachel 2010 GF Participant Invercargill

Getting There

Going Further literally will take you further as we go offshore mainland New Zealand to Great Barrier Island. (90kms from Auckland) Great Barrier is Aotea, the historic “gateway” to Aotearoa. Getting there is part of the journey you are on, a pilgrimage to go further with Jesus.

Everyone will be taking the boat there and back. Catching the boat is a great way to start this pilgrimage. It takes you right into the Karaka Bay amongst islands and is a great way to see the Hauraki Gulf and arrive at the Barrier along with those who will be with you for the week.

First get yourself to Auckland if you are from out of town. Book as soon as possible to score best value plane fares.

A boat is booked by Going Further to leave downtown ferry terminal (bottom of Queen St)at 3pm on Monday 30th Jan. Buses and trains arrive at Britomart Transport Centre nearby.

For those arriving at Auckland airport, you will need to have arrived by 1.30pm at the latest on Monday to give you time to catch the bus into town.

Getting Home

We have arranged for the charter boat from Orama jetty arriving in Auckland on early Sunday afternoon 5th Feb. Arrival time approx 3pm in downtown Auckland ferry terminal. For those leaving from Auckland airport – the earliest departure on Sunday 6th would be 5:30pm.

Carlton Johnstone

Carlton is the National Youth Ministry Development Leader for PCANZ based in Wellington. He is married to a beautiful woman named Sarah, dad to a delightful little boy called Max, avid U2 fan, movie addict and coffee drinker. His PhD research explored the challenges of the faith journey for young adults and the implications these have for belonging to a faith community. He works with local churches helping them think through and explore the kind of faith community they need to be for emerging generations.

Graham Redding

Graham is Principal of the Knox Centre for Ministry and Leadership. He currently lives in Dunedin, but has ministered in churches in Auckland and Wellington. His specialty subject area is worship, which he believes needs to be more’ God-centred’ and less ‘me-centred’.

Gary Mauga
Gary is currently completing his theological studies at Carey Baptist College and a candidate for ordained ministry in the Pressie tribe. He is Samoan, born and raised in South Auckland and part of Tamaki Pacific Islander’s Presbyterian Church, Glen Innes. Married to the beautiful Suliana Mauga, he loves music, singing, basketball, laughter, eating, fellowship, fun, taking risks, mountain climbing (never), and JESUS! His passion is to live a life that points people to God!

Selwyn Yeoman
Selwyn Yeoman has been involved in various youth leadership ministries for a long time! Like, really a long time! Apart from one seven month foray onto the Tibetan Plateau in western China, the last thirty years have been spent in three parishes in the south. At present he’s part-time a parish minister and part-time writing a doctorate on how we are partners with Jesus in b r i n g i n g h o p e f o r t h e E a r t h .

Natalie Yule-Yeoman

Natalie grew up in Ponsonby during the height of the great pasifika migration, and lived in the Presbyterian manse there. Her formative musical influences were Maori and Polynesian communities, her grandfather – a Scottish coal miner turned minister, who was reputed to sing during his sermons, and the folk music of the 60’s and 70’s.

Natalie has led any number of music groups for all ages, written and directed numerous church and school musicals, recorded four albums, and performed at lots of gigs, and concerts. She teaches at George Street Normal School in Dunedin where she also has responsibility for all the Kapa Haka and much of the school’s music and Te Reo Maori. She also leads a youth band (she’s an honorary “youth”) in her local church at Caversham.

Rebecca Connor

Rebecca is a youth worker/pastor/casual ornithologist/rugby ‘enthusiast’ (fanatic is more like it)/Jesus follower/nerd/creation lover/tweeter/sports fan/geek. She hails from Auckland, and is currently based at Somervell Presbyterian Church. She begins as a Ministry Intern with the Presbyterian Church in 2012, and is hugely passionate about what God is doing with Presbyterian Youth in New Zealand!

Angela graduated in 2003 with her Masters of Arts in ounselling from Central Michigan University. She enjoys working with young adults and adolescents.

It’s a learning thing. Going Further is a growing time for those young adults and leaders who hang out with the Presbyterian tribe in NZ. It’s a week in community to consider loving God and living the Jesus way as you head into the year with your life, career, studies and church.

Following the risen Jesus personally and as part of his body – the church – is the call on our lives – but it is seldom straightforward. We know there must be more, but get distracted, overwhelmed and on occasions discouraged looking for the reality. Going beyond the superficial noise and easy words to the stuff that really matters requires clearing some space to receive, pray and reflect on what’s happening. It’s about “going further” being formed in us.

It is a time to be open to the new, to be refreshed, to hear the voice of Jesus, connect in community and to be re-formed in order to go further as God’s people in the world.

The Theme - The Cost of Discipleship

What can the call to discipleship, the faithfulness to the word of Jesus, mean today to the university student, the business person, the shop assistant, or the labourer? What did Jesus mean to say to us? And how is his teaching relevant for us today? We will explore such questions over the course of this week together. The Sermon on the Mount will provide the foundational biblical stream for this week.

We will explore the difference discussed by Dietrich Bonhoeffer between “cheap grace” and “costly grace.” Bonhoeffer explains that ‘Cheap grace is the grace we bestow on ourselves…grace without discipleship….costly grace is the gospel which must be sought again and again, the gift which must be asked for, the door at which a [person] must know…It is costly because it costs a [person] his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life.’

Discipleship is not easy. But it is an adventure with God and with others. GF12 will challenge you to think about the implications of being a follower of Jesus for your relationships, your church, your vocation, and your spiritual life.

What will be happening at Going Further 2012?

Learning times, Swimming, Worship, Kayaking, Prayer, Jetty bombing, Creation care, Sunbathing, Spiritual direction, Snorkelling, Friendships, Hiking, Scripture soaks, Surfing, Planting, Asking questions, Fishing, Express Art and Music, Sleep, Fuel, Choco..lates, Solitude, …

“There were too many God moments to express in mere words. There were too many meaningful conversations to retell. There were too many expertly crafted photographic moments to recreate with mega pixels. There were too many exquisitely choreographed moments of nature to recount. The colours too vivid, the relationships too rich, the teaching too nourishing, are you getting the picture? Words just aren’t enough to express what the Going Further experience was like” Rachel 2010 Participant Invercargill
